Reiki (Universal Life Force Energy) is a laying-on-of-hands touch therapy, which helps patients achieve balance in body, mind & spirit, creating greater mental clarity and focus. Because our immune system is linked directly to cell memory, reiki revitalizes and activates the body’s own immune system to heal itself. Reiki reduces stress and helps to detoxify the body of harmful toxins. It also creates deep relaxation and a total sense of well being. Reiki is composed of two Japanese words: Rei (Universal, Guided, Spirit or God); and Ki (Incoming Life Force Energy). Every culture has a name for this life force energy, which permeates every living thing. In India it is called Prana. In China it is called Chi. Reiki practitioners are channels for this powerful healing energy.
Energy Healing is an effective therapy in the field of Alternative Medicine and Holistic Health. It is a natural therapy of healing to release all forms of negative energy-like illnesses, tension, pain, fear, and anger from your body, mind, and spirit. There are various reasons why reiki is chosen as an alternative support to an integrated wellness program including stress management; fatigue; chronic pain; enhancement of day to day health; healing of body, mind & spirit; accelerated recovery from surgery, chemotherapy and other physically debilitating treatments; dealing with life transitions; coping with grief, abuse, depression, anger, or addictive behavior.

During a reiki session, you remain fully clothed while comfortably reclining on a massage table or seated in a reclining chair. You may wish to remove your shoes to make yourself more comfortable during the session. You will listen to relaxing music during your reiki session. Dr. Shaheen simply places her hands on you very gently using a series of standard hand positions. Or if you prefer, her hands can be placed slightly above your body.
How will I feel during my reiki session?
A reiki session seems to ‘cuddle’ you like a comforting blanket. Clients report sensations ranging from mild or deep relaxation to color visualization, and often they fall into a deep, meditative, and relaxed state. Most of the clients who drift off to a peaceful sleep also report a floating feeling. Reiki energy encourages you to let go of all tension, anxiety, fear or other negative feelings. During the series of hand positions, some people describe a feeling of heat sensation or tingling. Interestingly, the reiki experience can vary from person to person – and possibly between different sessions.
How will I feel after my reiki session?
After your reiki session, you will feel refreshed with a more positive and balanced outlook. Immediately after the treatment you may feel a little dizzy, but this goes away quickly, especially after replenishing yourself with a glass of fresh water at the end of your session. You should be sure to drink plenty of water after you leave your appointment, too. A state of deep relaxation, combined with a general feeling of well-being & clarity is usually the most noticeable effect of a reiki session.
Is reiki safe if I’m pregnant?
Not only is reiki safe during pregnancy, it is recommended. There are reports that reiki makes for easier births and a cessation of morning sickness for the mother.
Do you treat children, too?
Of course! Reiki is safe and recommended for kids of any age. Children respond well to reiki energy, which is commonly used to treat the symptoms of autism, ADD, ADHD, and chronic illness. It is best that a parent stand by their son or daughter for reassurance and occasional help with instructions.
Will my reiki treatment hurt?
Absolutely not! Dr. Shaheen channels reiki while gently laying her hands on or above the energy centers/chakras and or meridians of your body. There are no tools or any other equipment used during a reiki session.
Reiki energy goes where it is needed in your body; the practitioner is simply the conduit to direct the power of this life force energy. More precisely, reiki energy works its way through the body’s meridians (energy channels) affecting both the organs and chakras, which mirror our endocrine system. The energy also cleanses and detoxifies the body, eliminating it of unwanted waste products.
Can reiki help serious illnesses and chronic medical conditions?
Yes. Reiki accelerates the healing process. When someone is seriously or chronically ill, regular reiki treatments can gradually restore the body’s natural state of balance, normal function, and wellness, especially when used as a complement to conventional medicine. Even if someone is terminally ill, reiki can ease suffering and enhance the quality of life. Hospice has embraced the use of reiki.
What are the other health benefits of reiki?
Many people turn to reiki to relieve pain or treat the symptoms and causes of illness. It will relax tense muscles, alleviate stress and promote overall wellness and self-healing. But you don’t have to feel sick to benefit from reiki therapy. The energy will adapt to your natural needs by strengthening your immune system, balancing your organs and glands, and creating mental clarity and focus. Reiki is a powerful and gentle healer that helps to holistically harmonize body, spirit, and mind. Examples of the psychological benefits include enhanced personal awareness and creativity, along with the potential release of previously suppressed emotions.
Is reiki a religion?
While reiki is spiritual in nature, it is not a religion. In fact, reiki is not dependent on belief at all and will work whether you believe in reiki’s healing power or not. Because of its secular nature, reiki can be practiced by anyone of any faith or religion.
